FF04: Beyond The Bike Shop
Each Friday, we publish a post from the team at Full Cycle – beneficiaries of the Surly Masher. These snapshots of their work and the youth served will help you get to know them better, and appreciate the importance of supporting youth experiencing homelessness in our community. We also encourage you to visit Full Cycle Bike Shop in South Minneapolis to see their work first-hand, check out the shop’s inventory, and get set-up for winter.
While our shop on Chicago Avenue is where you will most likely interact with Full Cycle, we spend a fair amount of time getting out of the shop, connecting with young people all over the city.
In addition to running a paid internship program, Full Cycle also focuses on providing youth with access to basic needs. This includes access to transportation (via Free Bikes), housing resources (via Outreach Workers on staff) and food (via Food Delivery and Pop Up programs).
A bike shop that delivers food!?
For the past four years, Full Cycle Food Delivery (FCFD) has provided graduates of our internship with an opportunity to stay involved as a part-time employee. Riders pick up food donations from various bakeries/ grocery stores and deliver the goods to youth-serving housing programs that partner closely with Full Cycle. If you spend time in South Minneapolis, maybe you've caught a glimpse of the FCFD bicyclists hard at work, hauling over 50 pounds of food in a trailer attached to their bikes.
This year, we have started a new program called Full Cycle Pop Up. Full Cycle partners with three transitional living programs (TLPs) that serve youth experiencing homelessness. Each TLP is equipped with a community kitchen. Full Cycle has a mobile pantry complete with cooking and cleaning supplies.
We rotate our TLP site each week, and spend an evening cooking with youth residents. Sharing food is a great way to connect with and meet new people who may be interested in what Full Cycle has to offer. Young people get excited to see Full Cycle arrive because they have started to associate Full Cycle with delicious food and a good time.
