MP01: Christina Julian

Between now and February 11th we’ll be bringing you a handful of short, behind-the-scenes interviews – A.K.A. Masher Profiles – with some of the peeps helping to make The Surly Masher happen.

For our first Q/A session, we start off with the one person who embodies the concept of “Surly Masher” most of all. As the FIRST (AND CURRENTLY, ONLY) PERSON IN HISTORY TO WORK FOR BOTH SURLY BRANDS, Christina Julian – lover of bikes (yay!), beers (yum!), and mashing (sure…) – has been an instrumental part of bringing them together for the FIRST TIME EVER.

1) Briefly describe what your role was/is at each Surly

As Marketing Manager for Surly Bikes, I helped determine how Surly should seek attention to its products and itself generally. As the Marketing Projectile Manager and Ruler of Bike Sponsorships for Surly Brewing, I channel the creative chaos into a productive flow and decide how we support things we love.

2) What is the Surliest quality about yourself?

I am way more approachable than I may seem. So many of my co-workers past and present are big friendly teddy bears wrapped up in piercings, tattoos, black clothing, and grimaces. The same goes for the products.

3) What is your favorite Surly bike (today)?

I’ve been stuck on the Flat Bar Cross-Check for about a year now. So versatile. So fun. So reliable. One of my favorite quotes is “At the end of it all, there will be cockroaches and Cross-Checks left.”

4) What is your favorite Surly beer (today)?

Pentagram! The Double Barrel-Aged version just came out and it is a winter favorite for me. Aged in red wine barrels and then again in High West Rye Whiskey barrels. My mouth is watering.

5) What do you love about winter biking?!

NO BUGS. I am a wimp when it comes to being stung, gagged, or poked in the eye anytime, but while riding it aggravates me the most. Biking in the Winter means crunchy tire sounds with crisp frozen bug free air. So good.

6) Ninja or Wizard?

Ninja. Stealthy martial arts extraordinaire suits me much more than a gray beard and pointy hat.

7) Will you play a game of MASH with me?

I have no idea what you mean by this so of course I will. YOLO

Through the very scientific process of MASH we’ve learned the truth about Christina’s future! She will live in Havana, Cuba, commute by pirate ship to her job as a square dance instructor and marry Roger Rabbit. We don’t make the news, we just report it.
