MP04: Matt Tennant
Between now and February 11th we’ll be bringing you a handful of short, behind-the-scenes interviews – A.K.A. Masher Profiles – with some of the peeps helping to make The Surly Masher happen.
Matt Tennant is a man on a mission. After years of working one-on-one with youth experiencing homelessness, Matt founded Full Cycle to give his support and outreach efforts a home. This home would be a safe space for vulnerable kids and young adults to seek refuge, receive guidance and support, and learn needed job skills to break the cycle homelessness.
What is your favorite Surly Bike?
Ice Cream Truck! Well, that's a complex answer to a deep question. My dream mountain bike three years ago was the Surly Instigator. So in my mind - coming from a dirt background -that's my dream bike. But the bike I've ridden the most is my ICT, which I love!
What is your favorite Surly Beer?
What is your favorite thing about riding bikes in winter?
Sliding around and being slightly out of control at all times.
Favorite place to ride in the TC?
The river bottoms are always Plan B and I end up there a lot. I love Elm Creek as well, but I've definitely had my most memorable moments at the river bottoms for sure.
Ninja or Wizard?
Ninja, for sure. Don't even have to think twice about it because I'm super athletic and I look awesome in black! *laughs*
How long have you personally been serving youth experiencing homelessness?
I'm trying to think when I got my first youth job ... I started the first-ever youth-specific food shelf in 2003, but I had been doing outreach before then and working at the outreach center ... so 20-plus years, at least.
What kind of bike do you have? You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
My true dirt bike is an NS Suburban and I've taken it off some very sweet jumps over the years. I've taken my ICT off some of my old dirt jumps as well.
What's the surliest quality about yourself?
Three of my favorite things - the qualities I embrace - are being outside, making fires, and drinking bourbon. Or making things out of dirt. I like to build things out of dirt. Mostly things to ride my bike on.
Dear MASH, tell us more about what Matt's evil twin would be like?
Matt's evil twin would be a Ferrari driving POTUS who summers in Nantuckett where he keeps an apartment. MWA-HA-HA!
